Join a Committee
Much of CYCCB’s work is carried out by committees composed of members from the CYCCB Board, Advisory Committee, certified practitioners, and from the professional community at large. We strive to have well balanced committees that represent the broad diversity of our field and practice settings. We are always interested in adding members with specific expertise to help with the committee’s work.
Committee membership is open to individuals who have knowledge, skills, and a desire to work with others to raise standards of practice and bring capable, compassionate, and competent CYCs to our world community.
Contact the committee chair to join one or more of the committees. You will be added to the committee and will receive information on how to participate in the work.
Marketing: Cindy Carraway-Wilson, CYC-P, Chair
This committee is responsible for creating plans and programs to spread the word about quality CYC practices, the work of CYCCB, branding/messaging, and the importance of certified CYC practitioners. Included in their work is creating marketing materials, conference displays, sponsoring events, making recommendations to the Board regarding branding, marketing, and messaging.
Certification Process: James Zarate, CYC-P, Chair
This committee is responsible for organizing and carrying out work to develop and expand the certification program and all related processes. This committee revises the certification exams, portfolio assessment process, and all forms.
Nominations committee: Frank Eckles, CYC-P, Chair
This committee is an internal CYCCB committee, chaired by the past president, that is responsible for running board elections and periodically making officer nominations to the Board. Members in this committee are current or past CYCCB Board members.
Research: Deborah Getz, CYC-P and Dale Curry, CYC-P, Co-Chairs
This committee oversees the development and implementation of all research conducted by CYCCB and its partners. The work focuses on validating the certification exams & program, and studying the impact of certification on young people, practitioners, service organizations and communities.
Website Development (Ad Hoc): Donna Wilson, CYC-P, Chair
This ad hoc committee was formed in 2016 to oversee the development of a new CYCCB website. The committee is expected to remain active through the end of 2018 while this work is being completed.
Advisory Committee: Cindy Carraway-Wilson
This committee is chaired by the current CYCCB president. It is composed of advisors nominated by CYCCB Board members who are invited to participate by a vote of the Board. Members are invited to participate in all CYCCB Board and Executive Committee meetings and are invited to attend face-to-face meetings of CYCCB leadership held to conduct strategic planning or other development work.
Periodically, the president asks the committee to make recommendations to the Board regarding important topics under consideration. People join this committee through a nomination by any Board member that is then approved by the full CYCCB Board.
BECOME TEST PROCTOR OR TEST SITE
Child and youth care certification testing is available to practitioners in the United States and Canada through proctored testing sites. These sites are operated by universities, colleges, service organizations, testing services, training providers and others. The sites are authorized to conduct testing using the booklet-based and/or online exams offered by CYCCB. CYCCB’s goal is to have proctored testing sites available in all communities, states, and provinces in North America.
All exams are conducted by approved proctors. Most proctors are associated with specific test sites. Some proctors are mobile so they can visit organizations, or attend seminars & conferences to provide testing.
Proctor eligibility policy: Proctors who are eligible to be certified are REQUIRED to be certified at the CYC-P level before being approved as proctors. Proctors who are NOT ELIGIBLE to be certified will be approved with the stipulation that they CANNOT test for certification. Certified practitioners who are proctors, whose certification has lapsed, are not allowed to retest or reapply until such time as the exam has been revised. If a proctor submits an application for certification, the CYC Office will verify compliance with this policy before recommending certification of the proctor applicant.
Proctor Agreement: Each proctor signs a contract labor agreement. The agreement is between CYCCB, the approved proctor, and the organization sponsoring the site. Some proctors sign agreements without being associated with specific test sites or organizations.
Proctors are paid when they conduct live proctored booklet-based testing. Virtual exams are proctored by Examity.
Proctor Payment: Proctors are paid for their services. The rate is set by the CYCCB Board. The rate is currently the amount below for each test administered.
Entry Level | $25 |
Associate Level | $25 |
Professional Level | $25 |
Many proctors offer their services as volunteers by having CYCCB make payment to their state or provincial association. Others make donations to selected charities and non-profits.

BECOME PORTFOLIO ASSESSOR
Portfolio Assessors complete a webinar-based training provided by CYCCB and work with an assigned Senior Portfolio Assessor for a period of time following training. Following this process and successful demonstration of the skills involved in assessing a portfolio, assessors become fully authorized. Assessors agree to attend additional periodic training to update their knowledge and to work with CYCCB to improve the overall portfolio assessment process.
Qualifications: Portfolio Assessors are CYC practitioners who are certified at the CYC-P level.
Payment: Beginning in January 2018, Portfolio Assessors will be paid for each applicant portfolio assessed. This rate is set by the CYCCB Board and is subject to change. Currently the rate is $25 per applicant processed. Assessors are only paid once for each applicant processed. In some cases this may require reassessing an applicant’s portfolio multiple times without additional payment.
Assessment Process: Assessors are assigned portfolios by the CYCCB Office. The Office transmits the portfolio electronically. Typically two assessors are assigned to each portfolio. Either one or both of the assessors may fully approve all activities or may designate an activity as ‘does not meet criteria’. This information is sent to the Office electronically. If all portfolio activities are not approved, the Office sends the ratings and comments to the applicant and requests that the portfolio be revised. When the revised portfolio is resubmitted by the applicant, the Office transmits this to the assessor who marked the activity as ‘does not meet criteria’ for re-assessment. The assessor then re-assesses the item and notifies the office as to whether or not the item has been adequately revised.
If an activity continues to be rated as ‘does not meet criteria’ the process repeats until the item is rated as ‘meets criteria’. At that point the portfolio is considered fully approved. If a portfolio is not fully approved after the third resubmission, the Office will assign a ‘portfolio coach’ to work with the applicant before the portfolio will be accepted for additional assessment.

BECOME PORTFOLIO COACH
Completion of an electronic portfolio that demonstrates competencies that cannot be adequately assessed using other methods is a certification application requirement. It allows the applicant to reflect on their own practice and write essays that demonstrate their writing abilities. For some practitioners this is a significant hurtle.
CYCCB offers practitioners access to coaches who can help them through the process. These coaches are assigned by the CYC Office if a practitioner requests one or when a portfolio has not been approved after two rounds of resubmission.
Qualifications: Portfolio Coaches are CYC-P certified practitioners who have exceptional knowledge of portfolio requirements and completion; most serve as portfolio assessors. Many Coaches are faculty of universities and colleges that offer CYC education or advanced practitioners in administration, professional development and research.
Coaches typically work with applicants by phone or webinar, meeting on a weekly or biweekly basis.
